Discussion:

In the search of the meaning of the English word ‘compliance’ in an adequate German translation we get on a list in the http://www.dict.cc/) showing a brought spectrum of nearly-synonyms which actually are very characteristic for the word contents that we are attributing to this idiom in the MFT:

Abidance

Accordance

Permission

Rule Observance

Observance

Obedience

Consent

Agreement

Fulfilment

Indulgence

Complaisance

Good Conduct.

We often hear people judge that it is an attribute of well set words to avoid the so called ‘foreign words’ where ever possible.

When I years back under the programme of the convention hosted by the AK MFT together with Ch. Christiansen and Stefan Kopp in Jena organized the meeting under the motto ‘Compliance’ I was well aware how much this term incorporates. And even today I am still convinced that all these conditions have to be obeyed by the patient if a long lasting therapeutic success shall be granted.

Reading these lines you might get the impression that I were about to pass on all responsibility for what does not directly concern the therapy procedure to the patient respectively his helping surroundings. I should say, rather the contrary is the case.

I want to emphasize that it is our task to realize besides the actual training of the neuro muscular processes the not less challenging task to put in practice Compliance with its manifold contents in therapy in the relation Patient/Therapist.

That means:

Before we can start a Myofunctional Training it is our upfront task to build up this Compliance:

1. Learn from the patient about his troubles either by listening or by observation meaning Diagnosis.

2. Convey this to the patient by Communication.

3. Make him recognise the necessity to adjust.

4. Get him to follow your instructions in Co-operation.

On this basis a therapy may be built upon which, like the myofunctional, must relay upon the contents of all the terms listed up in the above word catalogue.
