This exercise is generally suitable for loosening up the Orbicularis musculature. Two operational options are given: With dysfunctions as habitual hypertone, lip biting or sucking-in or, after strenuous training, as an intermediate exercise or as an ALTERNATIVE EXERCISE. after stressing ORBICULARIS EXERCISES as by this action the musculature will be loosened up or “shaken out”. In this sense it may be seen as a mobility exercise. |

Procedure: |
|
- Previous exercises: Particular pre-exercises are not required. If the work-out is started from the starting position mentioned it should be exercised before. |
|
-Starting position: Adequate exercises before starting are: ,M’-POSITION or DUCKBILL (pout). |
|
- Step-by-step-Description: -1 The lips are put together softly; the complete mouth musculature is slackened.. -2 The mouth hole is filled with air from within. -3 A short blast of air is being let out (see discussion) thereafter the lips immediately close up again.. -4 With immediately increasing the air pressure – without stressing lip tone – repeating step 3, the lips are achieving a continuous vibration. This may be described to the patient by the comparison to making motor noises. Actually it should resemble rather the nostril blowing of a horse which, however, may not be understood by a modern patient. -5 The babbling vibration of the lips is carried on as long as the air supply tolerates. |
- Timing: One breathing volume makes one sequence. Three sequences adding up to one series are recommended. |
Characteristics: |
Motility, relaxation. |
Remarks: |
The Perioral Musculature should be slackened! By comparison the monevenmt is not easily described.. The tension for trombone blowiung in contrary to trompeteing is still to taut. It is like when a horse snorts - but who knows that nowadays? |
Discussion: |
The mode of letting escape a short blast of air seems to make this exercise resemble the ,P-P-P’-EXERCISE. The essential difference, though is, that with the ,P-P-P’ the belt-muscles are strained while the purpose of the current exercise is the loosening. The difference to TRUMBONE-BLOWING is given by the fact that the TRUMBONE requires a strong tension to create a higher frequency of vibrations giving a sound. A similar effect of strain loosening is gained with the POOH-EXERCISE which also be positioned as a Propaedeutics exercise. Literature mentions a variation of this exercise: Starting from the DUCKBILL a faint air pressure is built up in the cavum oris against the softly closed mouth slit which is disrupted in its closure by a fast up and down movement of a finger rubbing the lips. This as well produces a babbling effect but by manipulation. So the effect is similar to the one of the performing discussed here. The current exercise however is more appropriate as a practicing of exercises without manipulation has more resemblance to a physiological movement. |
Instructions:
When the lips have been strained for a long time we will give them the chance to recover, to shake out, just for relaxation! This is very easy if you do it as if you were blowing the trombone and this goes as if you were imitating a motor. The lips babble when the lungs blow out through the mouth and let the lips flutter. You may do it as long as there is air in the lungs. After that you should breathe in and then continue babbling.
Meanwhile the lips recover from the tension and will afterwards be able to do a better training. The babble will be repeated as often as agreed.
