NECKSIDE STRETCH

Myofunktional Exercise  Collection

Application:

This exercise belongs to the group of collum muscle stretching exercises designed for creating deliberately a positive starting situation for Myofunctional exercises.

Furthermore the patient should be prepared for the task of controlled muscle movements (Orientation / Stereognosis). Additionally autonomous tensions should be loosened and their remaining as residual secondary rigidities as originating from a stomatognathic syndrome be avoided to hinder a ricocheting out of the neighbouring regions as a boomerang-effect to cause a relapse (This is factual for all collum stretching exercises).(Anatomy page 28).

Contents:

Stretching exercise for the relaxation of the lateral cervical musculature, Hold-exercise.

Materials:

Not mandatory, favourable a wall-mirror.

Procedure:

- Previous exercises: SITTING-POSITION recommended.

-Starting position: see above.

- Step-by-step-description:

-1 From the well-balanced position the head is inclined to one side – merely the head while the shoulders remain relaxed stabile. The movement neither inclines forward nor back nor rotates but only tends to one side.

The ear now moves towards the shoulder.

-2 The occupied position will now be attained under counting while the opposite stretched side shows a slight piercing aching in the musculature. Then

-3 slowly back to the start;

-4 and opposite side.

-Timing. The sideways movement should be set with about three seconds in a slow-fluent progress, the position keeping with counting may be variable and progressive from ten up to fifty. One sequence includes both sides. Recommended a series from about two to five sequences.

Characteristics:

Stretching, Orientation, Stereognosis, Slow-Motion respectively Hold-Exercise.

Remarks:

Among adults with a suspected CSS (cervical spine syndrome) the exercise will be carried out cautiously and with a hint of strength only.

Discussion:

As mentioned before this exercise is to create the fundament for the Myofunctional training, i.e. helping the patient to develop a consciousness the own body and, by this, to create a higher acceptance for the training through the optimized starting conditions (see COLLUM EXERCISES).

Instructions:

The head should be able to tilt to the side without great effort. To achieve that we, at first, go into our SITTING-POSITION. Now the ear of one side tries to get down to the shoulder. Slowly but further and further till a dull dragging feeling is coming up in the muscles. Keep the position while counting to ten. Do not move the shoulder towards the ear!

Then back to the SITTING-POSITION and the same on the other side. The ear slowly sinks down further and further to the shoulder, at the end with some vigour, till the dragging feeling begin. Keep the position and count to ten. Repeat as often, as set up.
