Functional sensitation and orientation of the tongue for respective deficits of the tongue body and its mucous tegument (Anatomy: Area II, B, Page 20). |
Contents: |
This exercise embodies an aimed, conscious sensing tongue movement. |
Materials: |
Not required. |
Procedure: |
- Previous exercises: Due to its character this exercise may stand for a pre-exercise itself. Optionally for a first step the orientation of the tongue tip to the SPOT may proceed; see in this respect TONGUE-TIP-ORIENTATION. |
-Starting position: Not defined, if possible: POINTPOSTURE respectively RING LOCKER. |
- Step-by-step-description: -1 At first the tongue tip, controlled by the therapist, goes to the exterior surface for example of the left last upper molar and now -2 wipes from there slowly and consciously feeling tooth after tooth towards the front (see also “Discussion”) till the middle and on past it to the right last tooth of the upper jaw; now down to the outer surface of lower tooth and the complete bow backwards as to the lower left last tooth, outer surface. -3 Now the inner, the lingual surfaces have a turn. The tongue tip goes to the inside of the tooth where it just stopped, i.e. last tooth down left, inside and from there forward to the middle down in the front and on to the right and backwards till the end and off upwards inside and the whole bow back, of course till up back left inside. -4 after several trials we go trough all fluently in one lap, from up back left outside till up outside on the right, down outside right and back to left, here to inside and inside around to the right, up again and in a slope back to the last tooth on the left, inside. |
-Timing: A certain timing is already contained in the step sequence. One action is one sequence. Additionally a time l9imit may be set for one sequence length. |
Characteristics: |
Function Kinaesthesia, (Stretching exercise), Organ Stereognosis, Mobility, (Motility), Tactile Kinaesthesia, Coordination. |
Remarks: |
The tongue body will be kept as small as possible. Additional stretch effect with a wide mouth opening. |
Discussion: |
Should greater difficulties hinder the course of practicing in the beginning the wiping may as well start on the inner surfaces but then with the mouth wide open to allow the monitoring. In an advanced state (or for adults) practicing should be done repeatedly over the day with the mouth closed. This MFT-exercise is one of the preferential non-manipulated simple and nearly multifunctional (see “Characteristics”) orientation exercises and, at least, includes all tongue muscles in coordination. Compared to COUNT-THE-TEETH the here discussed exercise puts less requirements on Coordination and Kinaesthesia but may be prescribed for a Mobility improvement (stretching by practicing with the mouth wide open). |
Instructions: |
A complicated scout task for the tongue tip. The mouth will have to stay wide open so that the tongue would be able to see. Now go to the upper left most backward tooth. Put the tongue tip on its outer surface. Now wipe in a circle on frontwards to the next tooth and on and on up to the middle of the row of teeth directly below the nose. Now on to the other side and on to the last tooth back right, outside. Then down to the tooth lying beneath. And again forward on the outside and in a circle to the other side, down left back, outside. Here the tongue tip switches over to the inner side of the tooth and, now, goes back on inside, first to right, back, inside, then up to right, up, inside and again in a circle till up left inside back. That may be practiced several times – as often as planned. |
