B. Intrinsic Tongue Musculature

II/B, 1. Musculi longitudinales linguae

Abb. 23: Intrinsic Tongue Musculature

1. Mm. longitudinales linguae.  2. Mm. transversales linguae.  3. Mm. verticales

Abb. 24: The ”inner Framework” (Shear grid) with the Aponeurosis and in the median line in a right angle to it the Septum

Site/location:

Two thin intertwined layers of fibre tracks-

            a. superior = beyond the Aponeurosis,

            b. inferior   = lateral, inferior surface.

Fixation:

 Aponeurosis

Path: in the full tongue length

Action: Tongue shortening

            superior: Convex back

            inferior  : Concave back

PALATE-SLIDE, BACK-CENTRE-FRONT, PODGY TONGUE- SLIM TONGUE, CAT’S HUNCHED BACK

II/B, 2. Musculi transversales linguae (transverse tongue muscle)

Site/location:

Fibre-work in a horizontal transversal direction to the Septum, bilaterally

Fixation:

Origo: From the border of the tongue
to the Septum, partially trough it to the opposite side.

Path: Penetrated by extrinsic muscle fibres

Action: Nearing tongue

borders towards each other, stretching the tongue.

                      Superficial fibres - Convex posture                      ;

                      Deep fibres –        Concave posture

Specialities Hypotonicity, Broad posture.

PODGY TONGUE- SLIM TONGUE, LITTLE ROLE, SLENDER TONGUE, TONGUESHAPING

II/B, 3. Musculi verticales linguae

Site/location:

In two blocks at both sides of the Septum, similar to transversal musculature (B,2)

Fixation:

Origo: from underside to Aponeurosis, rising up vertically

Path: in relaxed state intertwined in a soft arch to the transversal Mm. (B,2) and Longitudinales (B,1)

Action: Flatten and broaden

Specialities Hyperfunction = lateral pressing
