PIPELINE

Myofunktional Exercise  Collect ion

Application:

No Illustration

This exercise serves to train the entire reflex SWALLOW MECHANISM with regard to a correct swallowing of saliva. (See also Anatomy: Area I/ 3, 6, Page25a).

Contents:

This exercise consists of a pseudo manipulated, functional muscle action accentuating the continuous flow of the reflex motor skills.

Materials:

Drinking straw and a cup with liquid.

Procedure:

- Previous exercises: The total swallow reflex should be internalized.

-Starting position: The posture is variable thanks to the modern drinking straw technique. With a flexible straw drinking may be practiced standing upright, sitting or lying, each time with a slightly altered muscle involvement. This opens up the possibility to practice swallowing in every posture, comparable to the situation with saliva swallowing.

- Step-by-step-description:

-1 The drinking straw is dipped into the liquid with one end while the other is taken up by the lips.

-2 with the ,ZIP’- method a sip of liquid is sucked in

-3 and with the method TOUCH-THE-BUTTON, then swallowed. In this place also a modified method of the ,1-2-3’-EXERCISE may be used.

-4 continuation from step 2 and so on.

-Timing: Seen as a sequence the course gets a beat by the swallowing rhythm by approximately a second frequency. The sequence in its time-span depends on the capacity of the stomach.

As the essence of the exercise lies in keeping up an as far as possible continuous swallowing process it may be prescribed to breathe after every third swallow and carry on with this procedure.

Characteristics:

Continuous function kinetic reflex exercise, motivation, pseudo manipulation.

Remarks:

This exercise being a quite complex one needs a precise carry-out under thorough observation especially in reference to the small differences in the performing of the exercises counted up below.

Discussion:

The topical exercise practiced here does rather serve the getting accustomed to the functional swallow mechanism in a physiological saliva swallowing then food intake. Some authors therefore name this exercise the “Saliva swallow”. From the practical experience this should better be avoided; a large number of our fellow citizens falter when they are asked to swallow the own saliva.

Being pointed out to this process they rather tend to collect the saliva in the mouth for getting rid of it in a moment no one is watching. In former times this was the usual, those times with the spittoons are gone since times not so long ago in the westerly hemisphere while in some populations this habits are still practiced. Just to evade this rather impeding feelings we are practicing the exercise with the name PIPELINE, the continuous liquid transport by means of a tube and a pump where tongue and diaphragm represent the pump (,ZIP’). The consequent step in the course of training, then, would be the exercise SUCKER which is doing without “hetero” liquid.

With the exercises

1. WATER CARRIER,

2. LIQUID SWALLOW,

3. CONTINUOUS SWALLOW,

4. RAPID SWALLOW,

5. PIPELINE und

6. SUCKER

it becomes evident that exercises seeming quite similar at the first glance may show distinct differences in the neuromotoric action. The intricacy of the function mechanism requires a considerable amount of meticulous precision for the task to be solved. A remarkable therapeutic effect may rather be gained in small steps.

For this reason here is a summing up of the differences between the six exercises arranged in a row after their complexity.

1. The step from the forming out of the small dimple till swallowing with liquids.

2. Keeping the dimple formation with a one-time swallow.

3. Consciously monitored stringing together of swallowing actions.

4. Moving on to a reflex based process in the action.

Instructions:

incessantly transported from one place to another.

Incessantly; this is exactly the task here.

Through a drinking straw which represents our Pipeline a whole lot of sips shall be pumped.

This must be done with the ,ZIP’

from the ,ZIP’-Exercise. “ZIP” –a small sip is sucked into the mouth followed by “Touch the button” (as in the homonymous exercise) and the swallow.

1, 2, 3 times, a quick gasp and once again

1, 2, 3 times pumping and swallowing and again a quick gasp and so on till the glass is empty, without a break.

Practice several times a day.
