Strengthening of the submandibular region.. (Anatomy Area IV, V, VI, page 27 f.f.)

Contents:

Dynamic kinetic function exercise for deflecting (pulling down) the jawbone to strengthen the musculature and unburdening the temporomandibular joints.

Materials:

Plastic drinking straw and glass of water.

Procedure:

- Previous exercises: Not obligatory, if needed, the HOLD-AND-PULL.

-Starting position: ,L-M’

Step-by-step-Description:

At the beginning the therapist will manipulate the plastic drinking straw. Later on the patient will do that by himself.

-1The patient faces a glass of water, the straw between his lips

-2 A bit of water gets sucked in and swallowed

-3 now the therapist starts squeezing the straw stepwise  and more

-4 and more etc

The sucking gets harder and harder, oral diaphragma and hyoid muscles get strained the mandibula is pulled down in its hinges, the adductor muscles are stretched.

-Timing  Five sips (the amount of water does not matter), pause and repetition. Up to the round.

Characteristics:

Stretching of adductors and joint capsule, strengthening of the deflectors.

Remarks:

It should be minded to have the adductors stay eased.

Discussion:

Mainly to be used against joint compression and adductor cramping. The exercise may also be performed as a UNILATERA EXERCISE. In this case the straw is held in one mouth corner and quasi automatically the submandibular musculature will be pointedly strained on this side.; additionally the order may be given:” Suck on the left side”!

Instructions:

We are going to strengthen the muscles of the neck’s front side. When we suck water from a glass we strain our mouth floor thus training the muscles.. The more difficult it gets the better the training effect.

Therefore at first the trainer slightly squeezes the straw together later on more and more. The sucking gets more and more strenuous, the muscles are working heavier and heavier.

Later on you may do the squeezing all by yourself.

5 gulps per round, pause, and repetition; as often as agreed.
