The Exercise is valuable for an incompetent Orbicularis musculature (OMH – Open Mouth Habit)

with symptoms of flabby lips up to a (tissue caused) inability to close the oral fissure (“too short upper lip”). ( Anatomy, I/3, Page 13).

Contents:

Mobilisation and strengthening of the tissue through active autostretching.

Materials:

Not required.

Procedure:

- Previous exercises:

Not necessary, recommendable the training of a stand-by position.

-Starting position: Conditional, recommendable the ,M’-POSITION (,L-M’).

The molars are rested upon each other to avoid the mandible protruding. (Dysfunction!)

- Step-by-step-Description:

-1 The lower lip is spread over the upper lip and pushed towards the nose as far as possible. During the learning phase the therapist will act as spotter by gripping the lower lip to place it, pulling upwards, over the upper lip to fix it there for some seconds. Afterwards the patient will have to try to hold this position. In the follow the patient himself takes over this task of manipulation to get trained for his later job to take up the position with the mere power of his own lip musculature.

-2 the lower lip presses itself on to the upper one and then slowly glides down over it quasi massaging it (see paragraph “Discussion”).

-3 Return to the starting position and short break.

- Timing:

Considering one action of circa five seconds as one sequence ten to maximum fifteen sequences may be added to a series.

Version 2:

This version or exercise pictures the very inversion of the afore described. The lips are exchanging roles, the upper lip lies down on the lower lip  as far as possible towards the chin, drawing itself upwards in the follow. This action is much more difficult as the afore described.

An alternative offers the LIPSTRETCH. Here, too, the work-out may switch between basic version and version 2 changing roles between upper and lower lip.

The Above discussed version makes a characteristic mobility exercise.

If it is desired to accentuate rather the stretch character, the current extreme position may be held in the way of a hold exercise by counting before the “massaging” gliding back is carried out.

Characteristics:

Auto-stretching with a little massaging effect, mobility, gross motor, kinetic, hold exercise.

Remarks:

  1. for a prolonged work-out cream should be put on the lips.

  2. with obvious mentalis problems the exercise LIPSTRETCH will be more adequate.

Discussion:

As mentioned above, The lower lip is “massaging” the upper one in gliding down. The exercise may give the impression to aim mainly on the upper lip. Indeed the lower lip is stretched and strengthened much stronger while the upper lip will loosen its very frequently diagnosable hypertone of the upwards seizing “wheel spokes”(Anatomy page 11) of the fibres leading into the Orbicularis. A real genuine effect upon the upper lip is gaining the version 2, The reversal of the main version of the exercise.

Much more significance may be accounted to the lively self training and realizing of the general Orbicularis position. Quite a number of patients hold this posture of a “too short” upper lip in a constant cramping grimace as a habit and thus may be positively influenced.

M. HANSON holds as a pre-exercise the keeping of a salt solution in the rostral vestibulum as a relaxing measure. Maybe the effect is less pharmaceutical then psychological.

As an associated exercise the ,E'-EXERCISE will yield a relaxing effect of the Mentalis and a stretching of the chin region. As an easing exercise the BABBLE is recommended.

A stretching effect is gained especially upon the lower lip with the manipulated stretching exercise CHUBBY LIP (see there).

Another exercise, the WRYFACE is only mentioned here for the sake of completeness. It also yields s stretching effect upon the soft tissue of the mouth region. Its character is more motivating/funny. The upper lip draws itself far to one side, the lower lip goes into the opposite direction, and the lips slit stays closed. The exercise is rather belonging to the MOBILITY EXERCISES. As the description may be a bit complicated the reader is referred to the respective sketch.

Instructions:

The lips do not manage to keep the mouth shut? The Clowny-face will help! Clowny massages the lips.

And so it will be done:

Lay the lower lip upon the upper, quite far up, till the nose (initially the fingers may help). Leave it there for a moment then strain the lower lip properly and slip down from the upper.

With it the lower lip massages the upper.

And this is repeated as often, as we fixed.

And when we have arranged it, you also can do it vice versa:

Lay the upper lip downwards upon the lower, quite far downwards, then strain the upper lip and pull it up over the lower lip.
