CHUBBY LIP |
Myofunktional Exercise Collection |
Application: |
to enlarge click picture |
The exercise is intended for an insufficient mouth slit closure combined with the lower lip gliding between the incisal edges of the incisivi (Invasive Lower Lip) as well as with habitual Mentalis hypertone (Anatomy: 1, 1, 4, Page 15) |
|
Contents: |
|
Manipulated hold exercise with a mechanical blocking off of the lower lip; to a certain degree as well tissue stretching. |
|
Materials: |
|
Dentist’s cotton role size 2, chewing gum role. |
|
Procedure: |
|
- Previous exercises: Instructions about the (desired) ,L-M’-POSITION. |
|
-Starting position: Optional, recommended the BASIC-POSITION. |
|
- Step-by-step-Description: After a detailed instruction about the existing problem and the long-term aim of a not tensed up lip closure the patient gets instructed to deposit a (moistened) cotton role or (possibly more motivating) a little finger thick and about 3 cm long role shaped lump of chewing gum (sugar free) into the inferior part of the vestibulum and to keep it there as often and as long as possible. |
- Timing: The procedure is only intended to be the an approach to the active training (see above). lip stretching methods should be chosen, for example as contained in the exercises listed up below. |
Characteristics: |
(Stretching exercise), instruction, motivation, feedback. |
Remarks: |
The measure is exerting sagittally a retrusive effect on to the mandibular incisor teeth (prior consultation with the orthodontist). |
Discussion: |
As already stressed before, the method only introduces a muscle function therapy. An alternative may be given through the vestibular plate which can not be seen as muscle function therapeutic in the sense of the word. From the viewpoint of a stretching effect (or as secondary exercise) it may be referred to the below listed exercises.
The following description may serve as a useful mode of application for a simple and effective measure:
TRAPDOOR:
1. After having discussed and visualized in a hand mirror that and what sort of damage the lower lip may cause 2. it will be demonstrated insistently where the lip should never glide (between the incisal edges of the front teeth (Maxilla / Mandibula) 3. and where it is supposed to lie; at first slightly exaggerated, jabbing the upper lip upwards just a bit till the inner surface of the lower lip feels the incisal edges of the upper teeth. 4. As mostly, caused by the patho-anatomy, the gliding between of the lip rim is fairly not avoidable, as a “first aid measure “the TRAPDOOR is offered: In Our practice we are cutting out a plastic platelet of ca. 2cm in diameter (depending on the size of the vestibulum) from a plastic folder ( fancy colours, fancy forms, little hearts, cloverleaves, faces etc.) round off the edges, cut in a hole to tie a ribbon fast which the patient may wear around the neck as not to loose or swallow the item and, then, demonstrate how to wear the platelet in the vestibulum and negotiate to use the TRAPDOOR for the moment as frequently as possible. Instructions:
As the lower lip constantly glides between the teeth or presses against the lower incisors and, so, turns the whole face crooked it has to learn where it belongs.
For this purpose we have invented the role.
When the role sticks in between lip and teeth nothing nasty will happen any more and the lip will have the opportunity to get used to where it originally should be.
And to give it a chance to really get used to it the role should be in the mouth as frequently as possible and always in the correct position.
Later on the work-out will go on without using the role.
