This exercise is to sensitise the rim of the tongue – generally in lateral tongue problems presumably the broadened position with consequences as lateral tongue pressing or biting-on (Anatomy: Area II, B, Page 20)

Contents:

Manipulated sensitising of the surface mucosa of the tongue rim.

Materials:

Tooth pick, olive probe.

Procedure:

- Previous exercises: Optionally TONGUESHAPING.

-Starting position: See step sequence.

- Step-by-step-description:

-1 In the first phase a tooth pick is tuck between the occluded teeth on both sides in the premolar region in a way that the tips protrude a few millimetres into the cavum on either side.

 

-2 The spikes are held in this way for some while; the tongue tries to avoid contact with the tips.

 

-3 In a further step which simultaneously acts as a success control for the first phase, the mouth stays open. The tongue lies at the mouth floor;

-4 The therapist taps the tongue rim laterally with the olive probe. The tongue is to contract away from the touched site. (At this see also paragraph “Discussion”, TONGUE DABBING).

-Timing:  The first and main phase of the exercise represents a static hold-exercise. In this respect one training phase is filled up with one continuous sequence. The keeping of the pick should at first be set for one minute and later on stepped up to about a quarter of an hour or more.

As motivational background it might be referred to certain film heroes (which tick is mostly presented “new again and yet again”) are also holding those picks in their mouth.

Characteristics:

Tactile aesthesis, standby position, tone increase (transversal tongue musculature), tactile kinaesthesia, Orientation, Sensitation.

Remarks:

Is the tongue surface desensitized in a manner that even a possible injuring by the wooden tips will not be noticed it might become necessary to, firstly; prepare with the mentioned exercise TONGUESHAPING followed by the in step 4 mentioned  olive probe (see also paragraph “Discussion”).

Discussion:

In the discussed version two simple exercises have been put together to one exercise with two phases which, of course, can be practiced separately, the chore being a bit too simple for a full-fledged exercise, though there is the part in step 4 as a very first reflex test with the name TONGUE DABBING which may be carried out wit a bulb-headed probe having been cooled down wit an ice spray.

A further possibility for a sensitation and orientation is mentioned in literature as follows ( see also TONGUE STROKING):

With a toothbrush or a piece of cloth with a furry surface the tongue is stroked from back k to forth along its rim. This will cause a reflex provocation which results in a contraction of the tongue.

A similar effect is described through spraying the tongue rim with a cryos-pray.

As well the GUESS-THE-TAP may be used in this context. Active MFT-exercises for this problematic which may be used in the follow for this state of problem are: DRAW-BACK, PODGY TONGUE- SLIM TONGUE, SLENDER TONGUE.

Instructions:

So the tongue is spreading too much, precisely, it is nudging against the sides without noticing.

So we will teach it how to feel that and we will do it this way: As we have practiced the two tooth picks are taken sidewise between the teeth so that they will protrude just a bit inside your mouth. You may very well walk about with that. If somebody is wondering at that you may tell him that quite important inspectors in the movies are doing the same.

                                       Inside the mouth now the tongue suddenly can notice that it is hitting against something on the side – our picks. This is what the tongue will be avoiding from now on. If it has learned that it will be able later on to accomplish that without the picks – to stay away from the border. To allow the tongue to learn it you should carry the picks as often as possible.
