DRAWBACK

Myofunktional Exercise  Collection

Application:

to enlarge click picture

This exercise is suitable for the habit control of the lateral tongue pressing (thrust) or biting in a habitual lateral tongue spreading (hypotone transversal tracks[019]) and  a “too big” tongue.

See also  SLENDER TONGUE and SLIM TONGUE- FAT TONGUE.

Contents:

This HOLD-EXERCISE is training the strengthening of the transversal, internal (intrinsic) muscle tracks of the tongue Anatomie, [page 018 ff.]with a simultaneous building-up of the traction force of the external (extrinsic) tongue muscles (see also Anatomy).and muscles of the oral diaphragm as well as the supra [026] and subhyoid [028]) musculature.

Materials:

Facultative for the start: Elastic and hand-mirror for self-control.

Procedure:

- Previous exercises: Recommendable is a completed training for the first third of the tongue including the habituation of the  POINTPOSTURE.

-Starting position: The tongue tip is at the POINT.

- Step-by-step-description:

-1 (With initial hand-mirror control) the mouth opens, the tongue is keeping the POINT during the whole subsequent action.

-2 Now the patient tries to “pull the POINT backwards” what in reality will not be accomplished.

-3 At the same time the tongue back is maintained to be  arched upwards (CAT’S HUNCHED BACK).

-4a As a statomotor exercise the maximum position is while counting out.

-4b As a dynamic-kinetic exercise there will be a short keeping of the maximum position – for example with a short counting to three – relief of tone, tense to maximum position, relief, tension and so on.

The actions are counted.

-Timing:

In the static mode a  the sequence is formed by the –in the course of the training increased – counting while holding the maximum muscle tension of pulling backwards, for example from initially ten till later on up to twenty. After a loosening phase as with the  BAGGY TONGUE there may be linked together up to five sequences to form a series.

In the kinetic mode b a frequency beat is built up with the single actions through the exercising course which may be increasingly set to a sequence of five to fifteen. Here, too, with pauses in between, several sequences may form a series.

Furthermore the exercise may be drafted as an ALTERNATIVE EXERCISE by executing one run in mode a, one in mode b.

Characteristics:

Crude motoric, mobility, mainly static, stretching, stereognosis, orientation, coordination.

Remarks:

The patient should mind the flexing of the tongue back upwards to the palate and avoid the feeling of lateral contact with the teeth arches.

Discussion:

In contrary to the here discussed exercise the carry-out in  SLENDER TONGUE rather emphasizes the sensory while the exercise FAT TONGUE- SLIM TONGUE requires a kinetic action. The exercise  TONGUE STRETCHING is forcing the contraction of the transversal musculature by its crude motoric mode but equally holds dangers ( see there).

Instructions:

The DRAW-BACK always is practiced when the tongue is spreading. The starting position is quite the same as with the ,L’ . The mouth is opened wide while the tongue is keeping a firm grip on the POINT. The tongue back forms the cat’s hunch, it leans back on its seatback, the palate.

Now the rear tongue muscles those with which the tongue is tied on try to pull it from its seat with full power. The tongue tip is clinging to its POINT with all the same strength. When you control this in the mirror you will observe the tongue being pulled to length. Quite long and slim it gets. Just that had to be gained. Do not touch the teeth at the side.

Hold it with strength counting to ten, then back to the start.

Short pause and repeat as often as settled.
