This exercise is one of those belonging to the DIAGNOSTIC EXERCISES. With a special causal indication it may be applied to strengthen the submandibular muscles to unburden the TM-joints. |
Contents: |
Method to be applied in a rather static mode to work out the Mandibula deflectors. |
Materials: |
Not required (hand mirror) |
Procedure: |
- Previous exercises: As appropriate: HOLD-AND-PULL or SUCK AND PULL. |
-Starting position: (,L-M’ as the circumstances require.) |
- Step-by-step-description: -1 The patient is looking into the hand-mirror and/or lays his hand on the front side of his neck. The therapist tightly tensions his own respective muscles for demonstration. -2 The position is held under counting to ten followed by relaxing. -3 back to step 1. |
-Timing: a) In the static variation the training posture is taken up, counted to 10, relaxing = one sequence; about 5 sequences should be composed for one series. b) The dynamic variation requires a succession of tensing and relaxing, as well with 10 muscle actions (sequences) generating one training phase. |
Characteristics: |
Hold respectively strengthening exercise. |
Remarks: |
As repeatedly mentioned this exercise is not a characteristically physiological muscle strain and should be discontinued towards the end of therapy. The teeth must not be occluded . (Relax adductor!) |
Discussion: |
If the therapist should not be able to demonstrate the tensing on his own body there are going to be certain difficulties to mediate the task. A photo of a sportsman in action would be quite helpful when in utmost body strain his neck muscles are tightened as well to make a THICK NACK, the picture from above might be helpful. As said, this posture belongs to the DIAGNOSTIC EXERCISES. It is offered here to ease the TM-joints, similar to the exercise SUCK. Here the muscle action rather less in physiological frame conditions – it is static (HOLD-EXERCISE). Nevertheless it may also be executed dynamically in turns with tensing and release. |
Instructions: |
Tensing the neck to become thick at the front. You can see that with sportsmen who are hard pushing to be excellent. For monitoring the hand feels how beyond the skin the muscles of the neck get tense – you can also see that in the mirror. Practice as often as agreed. |
