LETTER SLOT

Myofunktional Exercise  Collect ion

Application:

To enlarge click Picture

The exercise can be employed in different modi and thus in different destination routes. The main target area lies in the cheek region, the two lateral components of the ‘belt’ musculature, Buccinator and Risorius (Anatomy: Area I/5,6, Page 05, 06). Here it will, then, be applied in a static mode for tone raising and in the kinetic for stimulation of the motility.

For the middle part of the ‘belt’, the Orbicularis, the exercise serves as an auto stretch measure for the therapy of cramps and for relaxing (Anatomy: Area I/4;  Page 05)

Contents:

Static or kinetic tensing of the cheek muscle region with simultaneous lateral stretching of the Orbicularis. Compare: Passive stretching exercise SPECTR (SPOOK) (see also notes in paragraph “Discussion”.)

Materials:

Not required.

Procedure:

- Previous exercises:

A direct pre-exercise is not necessary, generally the mouth slit closure should have been practiced and the ,M’ –POSITION obtained.

Starting position:

,M’ –POSITION

- Step-by-step-Description:

-1a (Kinetic mode) By exclusively tensing the lateral muscle tracks of Buccinator and Risorius  Rima Oris is pulled broad while the up and town pulling radial fibres  should not (Anatomy: Area I;  Page 11)  come into action. Likewise fully loosened will be the Orbicularis. It should be minded the lips keeping contact (see “Discussion”).

-2a The end position of a maximum broad pull position is obtained, briefly held and left to, immediately, return to the start.

-3a Directly to step 1a.

-1b (Static mode) Same as 1a.

-2b The end position of a maximum broad pull position is held under counting to a given tally; return to the start.

- Timing:

Under a. the tensing and loosening in a second beat represents one frequency unit which can be added up with about ten actions to one sequence. Several sequences may be summed up to one series.

Under b the end position is held on to under counting – initially up to twenty, later on with increasing continuance. (Makes one Sequence).

These modi, now, may be combined to a  CHANGING EXERCISE by, each time, putting in a row one sequence a and one sequence b.

For the ALTERNATIVE EXERCISE the BABBLE (for loosening) or SPECTRE (for stretching) can be added.

Characteristics:

Under a: Kinetic, Motility, Coordination/Stretching.

Under b: Stretch exercise, Mobility, Gross Motor, Tone increase.

Remarks:

Solely the muscle couples Buccinator and Risorius are activated while the whole further perioral musculature stays relaxed, as well the Mentalis.

Discussion:

In the exercise discussed here the lateral stretching of the mouth slit happens in the antagonistic way, meaning, in the perioral system itself.

In comparison with the exercise SPECTRE the region is stretched quite in the same way but manually – by manipulation-.

The different carry-out modi are aiming at separate qualities of the Physiological Frame of movement.

In the kinetic mode (a) the motility of the cheek musculature will be improved from what a certain tone increase will result.

The static mode (b) exercises pointedly the movement range and a higher muscle tone. This mode is presumably qualified to stretch the Orbicularis tissues (see also Chapter LIPSTRETCH).

The exercise WIDE GRIN  is quite similar but prescribes the way of employment in a less strict way. In this method the mouth slit opens during the stretch phase possibly making the stretching effect more effective for the Orbicularis. In the here discussed exercise an additional “opening and closing of the letter slot” can be implemented, adding to the vertical the horizontal training direction  which, however, is taken into account more effectively with the WIDE GRIN  .

Instructions:

A letter slot is flat, broad and normally closed; this is how the mouth should look like.

For this purpose the muscles in the cheeks are pulling the corners of the mouth on either side as broad as they ca, with all their energy, but not upwards nor down, only in the width; the ears are getting a visit!

An, depending on what we have agreed upon, the lips get pulled broad – loosened – pulled – loosened while you are counting the actions. Or: When the mouth reached its maximum breadth, freeze in place, count to the number set and make a pause.
