TONGUE STRETCHING |
Myofunktional Exercise Collect ion |
Application: |
to enlarge click picture |
With lateral tongue problems this exercise will help strengthen the transverse tongue musculature and, thus, induce a transverse contraction (see “Remarks”), (Anatomy: Area II, B, 2, Page 19, [II, A, 1, Page 18] ). |

Procedure: |
|
- Previous exercises: Facultative TONGUESHAPING. |
|
-Starting position: See step sequence. |
|
- Step-by-step-description: -1 The mouth is opened, the tongue pushed out extremely far. -2 The tongue is going to take up a form as pointed as possible; the patient will perhaps sense some dragging pain within the muscles. -3 The position is maintained while counting. -Timing: The maintaining of the position in step 3 is counted up as one sequence, at first in short lapses while counting to twenty, later on increasingly. Within a series the DRAW-BACK may be switched in as an ALTERANTIVE EXERCISE., it may, as well, be beneficial to appoint loosening exercises as BAGGY TONGUE |

Characteristics: |
Gross motor skills, Tone increase, optical Feedback. |
Remarks: |
The thrust out position bears the danger of expelling one dysfunction by another – the tendency for a tongue pro or extroversion. |
Discussion: |
When using this exercise (see “Remarks”) the simultaneous application of DRAW-BACK is recommendable to avoid a breeding to tongue proversion. If the disorder is accompanied by a frenum abridgement or backwards positioning the here discussed exercise is especially apposite (and will become still more effective through a wide opening of the mouth). The sleep apnoea is a multicausal problem. Should the protraction musculature be to week (Genioglossus, see Anatomy: Area V & VI, Page 30) to avoid the sinking-back of the tongue body and thus an obturation of the pharynx this exercise may as well be helpful.
Similar exercises: PODGY TONGUE-SLIM TONGUE unlike the current exercise is a dynamic one, TONGUE CONTACTS is a rather towards sensory feed-back and unconscious habituation directed training (see there, paragraph “Discussion”) and the TONGUESHAPING a manipulated exercise which might stand as a pre-exercise. |
Instructions: |
The tongue is up to learn going forward sturdy and slim. So open your mouth and push the tongue out very far! Make it long, thin a tipped! Sometimes you will even feel how it has to strain as it causes sort of dragging feeling within the muscles. This is the way the tongue shall stay while you are counting to ten or to the agreed number. Afterwards the tongue may recover for example with the BAGGY TONGUE. You may by all means do this exercise more frequently; only not then, when someone will be watching. After all they are thinking you are meaning him and get offended |
