TIP PRESSURE

Myofunktional Exercise  Collection

Application:

to enlarge click picture

In different modi:

For a tone increase of the whole tongue (Anatomy: Unterfunktion.) and oral diaphragm muscles  (Anatomy: Mundboden.).

Contents:

Manipulated hold-exercise against an exerted pressure.

Materials:

Tongue spatula or dorsum of the hand.

Procedure:

- Previous exercises: Not requested.

-Starting position: Not essential, recommendable ,L-M’-POSITION or ,DRAWER-IN’-EXERCISE.

- Step-by-step-description:

-1 The mouth opens. The tongue tip looks (not too far) out watching, that it does not hit its surrounding anywhere. The tongue is held energetically very pointed and lean.

-2 At the beginning the therapist, later on the patient presses (with the spatula held flat or with the dorsum of the hand) sagittaly against the tongue-tip as if trying to press it back into the mouth. This is carried out as vigorously as required to keep a balance.

-3a After keeping the position under counting back to the start (see “Discussion”).

-3b After a short keeping of the position while counting the outside pressure is stopped abruptly and immediately resume. loosen – press - ……. By this procedure a rhythmical beat is generated.

-Timing: Under a: per sequence count to ten, short pause, repeat sequence, in the beginning three times, afterwards increasing.

Under b: three to five sequences with ten-frequency (ten pulses per second).

Characteristics:

Crude motor (a) static hold exercise or (b) frequency-clocked, static exercise, motivation.

Remarks:

With a tendency to a protrusive hypertone the performance goal  should be monitored carefully to avoid fostering a dysfunction. In all variations the mandibula will not be protruded.

Discussion:

A performance goal not mentioned before can be seen in to train up the transversal musculature of the tongue suffering from a habitual or dysfunctional broad posture or lateral tongue pressing.

The exercise discussed mainly strengthens the static component of the entire tongue musculature including the oral diaphragm as well by pressing against the spatula as, simultaneously, by trying to form a best possible slant and tipped tongue body which nowhere hits its surrounding.

This component moreover holds a similar effect as is given with the exercise TIRE OUT CHEWING for the mandibula adductors – a as well physic as psychic defatigation here for a tendency of ( mainly protrusive) tongue pressing with the simultaneously evoked feeling “enough pressing done for today”.

The therapeutic effect on the tone-type hyperactive tongue should, in any case, be monitored carefully not to, in an unfavourable case,  encourage the tendency of protrusion. As ALTERNATIVE EXERCISE are suitable BAGGY TONGUE or WAG.

If an increase effect is desirable in case of an incompetent tone, as said, the sequence may be carried out with a frequency beat by changing between the tongue pressure or  the manipulated counter pressure adapted maximally and subsequently taken back totally. Both modes may as well be arranged in a changing of the sequences in form of an ALTERNATIVE EXERCISE to form a series. This is done by exerting strong pressure in one sequence while in the following sequence the intermitting frequency is caused (giving an interesting example for a principally single static respectively stato-motor exercise which is either designed as a hold-exercise or, in change, as a sort of alternative exercise.)

Instructions:

…….for the patient to perform the exercise.

1a

The tongue should not make itself too broad sideways. To avoid this at first you take up the  ,L-M’-POSITION. Then:

The mouth opens and the tongue peeps out making itself quite slim and pointed. It should not hit against anything in its vicinity.

Now it gets pressure from outside directly against its tip, as we have practiced it.

Hold the position and count to ten.

Back to the ,L-M’ and again pressure against the tip.

Repeat 3 times or as often as we have agreed on.

Never push the chin out! “Drawer in!”

1b

The tongue will have to give up  pressing.

For this reason we first of all get into the ,L-M’-Posture. Then:

The tongue looks out of the open mouth, very slim and pointy and it does not hot against anything of its surrounding.

Now you start pushing from the outside against its tip as we practised.

Hold the position till the tongue gets tired and its muscles start aching.  When you feel that you say to yourself: ”This has been enough pressing for today”, and you decide to let it sit quietly on its ,L’-POSITION for the next hours.

And never push your chin forward!

2a

Because your tongue has too week muscles it shall get more power now.

First of all you bake up the ,L-M’-POSTION; then:

The mouth opens and the tongue peeps out making itself quite slim and pointed. It should not hit against anything in its vicinity.

Now it gets pressure from outside directly against its tip, as we have practiced it.

Hold the position and count to ten.

Back to the ,L-M’ and put on pressure again.

All this three times or as often, as wee agreed upon.

Never push the chin out! “Drawer in!”
