The depicted chart shows the basic scheme. It may be decorated or self-made by the patient.

This method is not quite a Myofunctional Exercise in the sense of the word but serves the night time habituation of an acquired muscle action. For this reason no hint towards the anatomy is given.

Contents:

Through the motivational component of keeping a control chart about the – assumed – night time composure as an aid for a Mental Training rehearsed muscle actions may additionally be habituated in the nightly behaviour.

Materials:

Recommendable is a visually appealing form of a scheme in which (+) or (-) can be filled in or, better, red and green adhesive points, depending on how the patient will evaluate his restraint in retrospect. (See picture)h

Procedure:

- Previous exercises: The muscle action desired should be mastered accurately and best the habituation phase for the daytime passed.

-Starting position: This will be specific for the respective trained muscle action; see also description in the “Instructions” for this exercise.

- Step-by-step-description:

-1 With planning the project and handing over the chart the procedure will be discussed thoroughly. See text in the “Instructions” which is turned over to the patient as well.

-2 For the next session fixed the chart will be turned in an evaluated. In case of a high failure rate it will be scheduled again.

-Timing: The detailed timing is prescribed by the method. The measure may be repeated in case of need as described above.

For the general training it should repeatedly be mentioned that the NIGHT SCHEDULE is one of the final exercises in the total course of training. The adjusted muscle action has to be mastered previously; the habituation for the daytime should have been absolved.

Characteristics:

Habituation, Motivation, Self-control.

Remarks:

As in the original Myofunctional Therapy a considerable amount of compliance must be seen as the base for success every patient under treatment will be able to paint a Plus or Minus in the place designated and, thus, consolidate the essential cooperation.

Discussion:

It is well recommended to apply also here methods from the HABITUATION like MEMOS; PICTOGRAMS or signs and items may be posted on the beside table or stowed away in its drawer. A funny example would be the finger puppet which has been put to bed in the drawer having been reminded to behave correctly in the desired manner.

As described in the “Instructionsit will be furthermore be advisable to combine the measures with an evening Mental Training.

For this procedure catchphrases are valuable as, for example, the TEETHCLICKING. The truth content will depend on the self-assessment (over or under estimation) of the patient. Therefore it is advisable for checking the notes to proceed most “diplomatic” to “get on the track” of the true facts. The subjective self-assessment does no harm to the motivating effect.

Listened up in the follow are the most essential exercises which may be combined with the NIGHT SCHEDULE.

Instructions:

Now the muscles are so well trained that they will even be able to function correctly at night.

Unfortunately this will not yet happen all by itself. First the muscles will have to learn that at night – same as over the day -  they need not do any wrenches. That is why we are going to watch that with our control chart, the NIGHT SCHEDULE and this will happen as follows:

On your bedside table you will have ready the chart and pencil so that you can take down your notes in the evening and maybe at night and, in any case,  immediately after waking up ( so you will be able to remember what you tongue did at night); you perhaps may as well use red and green sticker points.

The (+) or a green sticker stands for “victory” a (-), a red one for “flop”.

Additionally a memo may be posted on the table.

(If this has not yet been explained to you, please, remind me at the next session).

For bedtime always take up the REST POSITION. If we did not yet practice it or makes some difficulties let me demonstrate that to you in our next session!

Now for the clou:

That what shall happen correctly over the night is going to be acted out three times slowly and attentively before going to bed. And in doing so say:” And this is the way I’m going to do it all over the night.”

And should it happen that you get up at night it would make sense to just for a moment test the muscles and immediately take down a note. In any case instantly in the morning you will affirm your muscles still functioning right and take the result down on the NIGHT SCHEDULE.

It’s no use bluffing! After all your body knows quite well if it went on all-right or not.

Your notes will be evaluated next session.
